Composite bows are different from the Western European simple bows (so called longbows) in a way that in all cases several pieces of horn, wood were stuck together in layers, with bone stiffening. The form and structure of these were extremely diverse, but it is typical of all of them that in un-drawn condition they become bent strongly backwards, and this negative bending also remains in drawn condition in a length of 1-2 hand span at both ends of the bow. Turkish-Tartar composite bows, which represent the top of reflex bows, ensured a relatively high initial speed.

Good to know
The most important description about the Scythians - who created the animal style art – is from Herodotosz (BC.484-425), the Greek historian. According to Herodotosz Scythia was situated between the Danube delta and River Don, on a steppe land. But the relics of the typical art blossoming out around 750 BC were found both in the Hungarian Great Plain and in Inner Asia too. The relations between the Scythians and Magyars are continuously researched by historians and art historians, and although many denials born, the opinion is agreed by many people. The Scythians might have belonged to the Iranian family of languages.Their flourishing empire to the North from the Black Sea was destroyed by the attack of the Sarmathians, they reached The Hungarian Great Plain in the 1st century AD.
