Composite bows are different from the Western European simple bows (so called longbows) in a way that in all cases several pieces of horn and wood were stuck together in layers, with bone stiffening. The form and structure of these were extremely diverse, but it is typical of all of them that in un-drawn condition they become bent strongly backwards, and this negative bending also remains in drawn condition in a length of 1-2 hand span at both ends of the bow. Turkish-Tartar composite bows, which represent the best of reflex bows, ensured a relatively high initial speed.

Good to know
"Even the Chinese emphasised the Hun bow's strength and excellence. The Hun bow is much stronger than the ones used in the West, its carrying capacity and penetrating force is bigger." (Béla Szász). In the first part of the 5th century the number of Huns arriving in Europe was only 20-30.000. The life of these roaming nomads with huge studs was characterised by looting. They achieved their exceptional military success by means of dividing their forces into disciplined mobile troops of some hundreds of men. Their quick horsemen turning up unexpectedly caused great destruction and terror to their enemies. They reached the peak of their power during the reign of Attila, who was able to hold the tribes together, but with his death (453) the empire fell apart in the Carpathian basin.
